Daniel Rudisha, father to Olympic 800m record holder David Rudisha, is dead.

Daniel, himself a 1968 Olympics silver medallist, died on Wednesday night at the age of 73.

David, a two-time Olympics champion confirmed the death of his father on his Twitter handle.

“Our beloved father sadly left us last night,” the middle distance star said.

The older Rudisha has been battling diabetes for a long time and he succumbed to the illness just hours before Wednesday midnight in a local hospital.

David said his father had shown signs of improvement, but suffered a mild heart attack and attempts to resuscitate him did not yield any fruits.

Daniel who turned to coaching after retiring as a teacher was born in Kilgoris, Rift Valley Province.

He coached, among others, Billy Konchellah, the 1987 World 800m champion.
