Gor Mahia will receive only seven million more for their qualification for the Caf Confederation Cup quarter-finals.

The Kenyan champions booked their maiden berth into the quarters of the continental second tier completion and the ‘Green Army’, the ever-loyal Gor Mahia fans celebrated the historic fete that promised some sort of financial dependency with the recent much-publicised reports that K’Ogalo’s purse is set to be credited with close to Sh40 million for qualifying to the last eight.

But according to Gor Mahia Deputy Organising Secretary, Ronald Ngala, the club will receive just Sh7 million on top of the Sh29 million received for qualifying to the Group Stages.

Ngala now claims that playing in the CAF championships come with no monetary value, but pride claiming that even the regional CECAFA Championship makes more economic sense compared to the Confederation Cup.

Ngala claims that Gor Mahia earned less than Sh5 million for taking part in the same competition last season further warning that the figure might even go down this season if they don’t win the title. Last season, Gor Mahia earned cumulatively, Sh25 million after Dylan Kerr led side crashed out of the competition in the group stages.

“We got about Sh27 million on papers, but in real sense, we remained with a mere Sh5 million after all the deductions, “says Ngala.

With the Kenyan champions set to forfeit Sh1 million from the Sh38 million purse after they were slapped with a fine for unsporting behaviour in a highly tensed game with Lobi Stars of Nigeria, Ngala now says that the club will be left with nothing after all the deductions that also include the broadcast fee by SuperSport.

“Caf deducts almost everything from the money we receive. Even the balls and bibs we receive from Caf are not free, they deduct the money from what we get from Caf. We have to part with Sh2 million in broadcast rights alone, per game.”

We spend about 2-3 million in expenses per game and considering that we have 12 games, that totals to about Sh36 million in expenses.

“Playing at the continental stage is prestigious but there is no money. It is economical to take part in the Cecafa champions as compared to Caf because there, (CECAFA) everything is paid for by the organisers and you get the prize money.”
