Top officials of the Kenyan Prisons Women’s Volleyball Team might face disciplinary actions for ‘sneaking’ out of the country to take part in the Africa Club Championships.

The team landed in the country on Friday morning after being ordered by the Ministry of Interior to leave Egypt with the next available plane.

The team was reportedly held ‘hostage’ by the management of Al-Albilla Hotel in Cairo after players’ passports were confiscated over unsettled hotel bills.

The government moved in swiftly to save Kenyan public the international embarrassment but not at a cost.

“The State department for correctional services never cleared nor financed the team’s travel to Cairo and was surprised to learn of its presence outside the country.

“Given the breach of protocol and contravention of the rule regarding public servants travel overseas, the government has immediately organised for their repatriation.’

“While the government acknowledges and supports sports as one of the many sources of our national pride, we regret this turn of events which has caused the people of Kenyan undue embarrassment,” read a statement signed by Zainab Hussein, Principal Secretary State Department of Correctional Department.

But SPORTSNEWS AFRICA has reliably learnt that Team Manager David Kilundo, a senior officer at the Kenya Prisons Services is set to be summoned next week “to answer tough questions” on how the Kenyan Champions found themselves in Egypt without authority from their seniors.

“I don’t know what will happen, but we expect a stormy meeting. No officer is allowed to travel outside the Kenyan borders without permission and if that happened, then heads will roll,” a source within at the Prisons Headquarters told SPORTSNEWS AFRICA in confidence.
