Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been handed a three-year contract as Manchester United manager on a permanent basis.
Solskjaer was appointed as interim manager in December to replace the sacked Jose Mourinho and has led the club to 14 victories from 19 games – including a stunning Champions League comeback against PSG.
Manchester United were set to wait until the summer to hire a new boss, but have settled on Solskjaer to continue beyond the end of the season this morning in a statement on the website.
“Ole’s at the wheel! We can confirm that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as #MUFC manager,” United tweeted.
Solskjaer’s United take on Watford this Saturday as they look to end a two-game losing run and get themselves back on course for a place in the top four.
But despite the minor slip, United have decided to announce the decision to appoint Solskjaer today.
“From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club,” said Solskjaer.
“It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here. The last few months have been a fantastic experience and I want to thank all of the coaches, players and staff for the work we’ve done so far.
“This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and hopefully deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve.”
Solskjaer was the surprise choice to replace Mourinho earlier this season but his stunning transformation has led United fans to dream of the former glory days again.
They are playing attacking football, they’re using players from the academy, and the fans are singing again.
United are hoping the announcement will give the players a boost as they battle for a Champions League spot.
Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Romelu Lukaku, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard are among the players who have publicly endorsed his appointment while former players have also been unanimous.
Former captain Gary Neville was actually furious at the club this morning for not having done the deal.
He said: “I thought United would take the international break to appoint Ole. I’m not sure what the plan is now!
“Games coming thick and fast so no ideal time to announce without a big distraction to matches . Let’s hope for a snap announcement today!”
And he reacted to the news in a positive manner.
