Sasha Mutai, a leading contender in the forthcoming Kenya Rugby Union national election set for Wednesday, has accused his competitors of using bloggers to injure his character ahead of the much-anticipated polls.

The Ngong Road secretariat is set to usher in new leadership with the outgoing chairman Richard Omwela ineligible to defend the seat after serving the mandatory two-terms.

That now reduces the battle to ‘new comers’ led by Mutai who is seen as a strong candidate to replace Omwela.

Mutai, a former director has, however, read foul play in the campaigns when he accused unnamed opponents of soiling his name in a tensed campaign period, mainly concentrated online.

“It has been a campaign that is uncomfortable as my person has been attacked and false narrative shared through paid-up political bloggers whom I cannot dignify with a right of reply. If anything, these people aren’t loyal to even their paymaster. They have reached out to me so as not to publish the falsehoods. However, my integrity is so much important,” Mutai, who served as a KRU vice chairman between 2012 and 2014 said in a statement sent to the press.

Mutai, who also served as the director in charge of the national team between 2006 and 2010, has promised to prioritise the formation and registration of the Kenya Rugby Players’ Association that will set the best platform for discussion of player welfare and promotion of women’s rugby.

Currently, there is a tussle between senior players after the union cut their salaries by three quarters from Sh175,000 to Sh45,000 leading to mass withdrawal from the Shujaa squad that is struggling in the ongoing HSBC World Series.

Mutai will have to battle for the position with Former KCB chairman Asiko Owiro, Hon secretary Oduor Gangla and director Ezekiel Owuor.
