The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) has violated the International Rugby Union code in one of the many changes made in this year’s games calendar.

The new changes have seen KSSSA reduce the number of players who sit on the bench from eight to five and merge the calendar of the two versions of the game the 7s and 15s to first term.

Holding the two versions in term one unlike in the past now threatens the development of the game as players will now be forced to specialise in ither 15s or 7s, but not both.

Logistically, it will also be a burden on schools to adequately prepare both teams giving learning institutions with financial muscles advantage over others. Previously, teams that performed poorly in the 15s had the chance to change tact in the shorter version of the game.

In a circular by the Ministry of Education to schools, teams will be allowed to name 20 and 11 players in the 15s and 7s squad from 23 and 13 respectively.

According to insiders, the changes are meant to cut cost even as it emerges that there is a tiff between the Ministry and teachers over the control of sports funds.

Sources who spoke to Sportsnews.Africa said schools will no longer control their own funds and instead a team appointed by the Ministry of education is being considered to be in charge of the regional teams.
