Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has vowed Manchester United will spend sensibly in the summer transfer window.

United could back Solskjaer with up to four signings, amid interest in defenders, a forward and a possible midfielder, depending on the future of Ander Herrera.

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho is among the players United have tracked over the last year. United intend to put their plans in place now Solskjaer has been installed as the permanent manager.

United have spent £686.7 million since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and are yet to mount a credible Premier League title challenge.

Solskjaer had a terrible transfer track record at Cardiff five years ago and was criticised for signing his agent Jim Solbakken’s clients Magnus Eikrem and Mats Daehli, as well as Jo Inge Berget.

United academy graduate Daehli made 22 league appearances for Cardiff, Eikrem six and Berget fiatured in the Premier League only once.

The most Solskjaer has spent on a player was the £5million Cardiff paid Lorient for Bruno Ecule Manga on transfer deadline day in September 2014.

United always part with eight-figure fees in the transfer market and Solskjaer was measured when asked about their upcoming plans.

“United is a club that has money,” Solskjaer told the Norwegian media. “And that has to be spent in a reasonable way. People who know me, know that I will use that in a good way.

“We have a plan with the club, they have scouted players for longer than I have been here, and we have players that we need to keep. We will not spend money just to spend money.”

At his press conference on Thursday, Solskjaer revealed players’ agents had contacted United to express their desire to join the club.

“There’s been so many players written about that we’ve been interested in and so many players and agents have been in touch with our administration who want to come here and I’m sure when we decide what we have to do hopefully we’ll get them by pre-season, yeah.”

United opened talks with Herrera and Juan Mata about new deals earlier this season but the duo are about to enter the last three months of their contracts.

Mata, 30, is understood to want a minimum two-year deal which is proving a sticking point while Herrera, 29, was last week linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
