A struggling Kenya Seven will play Australia in the Challenge Trophy after losing all their group matches in the Vancouver 7s.

This is the sixth consecutive time that Paul Murunga charges have dropped to the Challenge Trophy as the country’s struggles continue with only four series left to the end of the season. Shujaa will take on Australia at 7.52pm on Sunday.

Day one in Canada was a tough one for Murunga who lost all his matches on Saturday having kicked off the day on a wrong footing; losing 36-12 to Fiji.

Shujaa then bowed to 35-12 to Samoa and the hosts, Canada extended Kenya’s pain with a 36-21 victory in the last group match.

They will now seek redemption when they take on Australian in the second Challenge Trophy after the match between Spain and Japan. Scotland will face Chile as host Canada take on Chile.

South Africa will face off with Argentina in the main cup quarters as New Zealand squares it out against Fiji. USA has a date with England as Samoa take on France.

Kenya’s poor result is linked to internal politics at the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) after the union slashed players’salary by almost three quarters leading to mass withdrawal from the squad by the senior players.

SPORTSNEWS AFRICA understands that the union slashed players’ salaries from Sh170,000 to Sh45,000 and the news did not go down well with the payers who opted not to renew their contracts.

KRU is set to go to polls on March 22 where Sasha Mutai is seen as the front runner to replace outgoing Richard Omwela who will not be defending his seat.
