Ruthless Napoli hand Ajax their worst defeat in Europe
Napoli beat Ajax 6-1 at home to hand the Dutch side their worst defeat in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
With two wins in two matches in Group A, Italian Serie A leaders Napoli arrived in Amsterdam with high expectations and lived up to them. After an early Ajax goal by Mohammed Kudus, Napoli took control and outclassed the home team.
Giacomo Raspadori headed in the equalizer, Giovanni Di Lorenzo headed Napoli in front, and on the stroke of half-time Piotr Zielinski was given a free run by Ajax to make it 3-1 for Napoli.
After a mistake by Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer, Raspadori produced his second goal just after half-time and Ajax was broken definitely. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia made it 5-1, Ajax captain Dusan Tadic received his second yellow card and substitute Giovanni Simeone extended the scoring to 6-1. The crossbar even prevented a seventh goal by Tanguy Ndombele.
The biggest home defeat ever in European football for four-time European Cup winners Ajax was a shock, although it was not the first time Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli impressed this season.
Napoli now leads Champions League Group A with nine points, three ahead of Liverpool and six of Ajax. Next week Napoli hosts Ajax and bottom side Rangers plays against Liverpool.
Ajax beaten to lose top spot in Eredivisie to PSV
Reigning Dutch champions Ajax lost 2-1 to AZ in Alkmaar on Sunday, while PSV took over first place in the Dutch Eredivisie with a 4-3 win over Feyenoord.
Mohammed Kudus put Ajax in front, but Mees de Wit equalized after profiting from a mistake by Ajax defender Devyne Rensch. Just before half-time Jens Odgaard put AZ in front, when he controlled a long ball from the back and beat goalkeeper Remko Pasveer.
In the second half, Ajax had several chances to equalize but AZ goalkeeper Hobie Verhulst made some excellent saves and had a bit of luck. The result means Ajax suffered their first defeat of the season and AZ stay as the only undefeated team in the Dutch top flight.
Also on Sunday, PSV and Feyenoord treated the audience with a true spectacle of goals. Thanks to goals by Feyenoord’s Oussama Idrissi, Danilo and Orkun Kokcu and PSV’s Jarrad Branthwaite, Cody Gakpo and Guus Til, the match ebbed and flowed throughout.
In the 83rd minute, Armando Obispo headed home the winning goal from a cross by Gakpo. The win means PSV take over top spot in the Eredivisie from Ajax on goal difference. Both teams have 18 points after seven rounds. AZ are third with 17 points, followed by Feyenoord with 16 points.
Ruthless Ajax demolish Rangers in Champions League
Dutch champions Ajax started their UEFA Champions League campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Rangers in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder surprisingly chose Mohammed Kudus as a central striker, while Calvin Bassey, who joined Ajax from Rangers in August, started in defense.
For Scottish giants Rangers, the match in the Johan Cruyff Arena marked their return to the Champions League after 12 years’ absence.
From the beginning, Ajax outplayed Rangers. Edson Alvarez headed Ajax in front from a Steven Berghuis corner and the latter doubled the scoring.
The choice of coach Schreuder for Kudus, who was refused a transfer to Everton in August, turned out to be a shrewd one, with the Ghanaian playing well and hitting home the third goal.
In the second half, the pace of the match slowed down and Ajax seemed satisfied. A goal by Rangers’ Borna Barisic was disallowed for offside and Steven Bergwijn made it 4-0 after a mistake by Ryan Jack.
Next up for Ajax in Group A is Liverpool at Anfield on September 13, while Rangers host Napoli.
Manchester United sign Ajax star Antony on a record transfer fee
Manchester United Tuesday reached an agreement with Ajax on the transfer of Brazilian winger Antony.
According to Ajax’s statement, the two clubs have agreed on a transfer fee of a Dutch-record 95 million euros. Including add-ons, the fee could rise to 100 million, easily breaking the former record (about 75 million) set by Frenkie de Jong’s move from Ajax to Barcelona.
Antony, who agreed with Man Utd on personal terms following his medical test on Monday, also becomes the third most expensive player in the club’s history after Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.
Antony will be reunited with coach Erik ten Hag and defender Lisandro Martinez, who both moved to Old Trafford from Ajax in the summer.
The Brazilian has scored 31 goals and given 27 assists for Ajax and his previous club Sao Paulo, and has also made nine appearances for the Brazil national team, as well as winning an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo 2020.
His arrival comes less than a week after Manchester United signed Brazilian international midfielder Casemiro, while the club are reported to be working on a loan deal for Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Although Manchester United’s next game is against Leicester City on Thursday, Antony is unlikely to have his work permit in order to make his debut and will probably have to wait until Sunday when the United host league leaders Arsenal.
Ajax sign defender Calvin Bassey from Rangers
Dutch champions Ajax Wednesday reached an agreement with Rangers FC for the move of defender Calvin Bassey.
Bassey will land at Amsterdam as successor of Lisandro Martinez who has since joined English Premier League side Manchester United.
The 22-year-old Nigerian international signed a contract with Ajax for five seasons until mid-2027. Ajax will pay Rangers FC from Glasgow, Scotland, a transfer fee of 23 million euros (23.53 million U.S. dollars), which could increase to 26.5 million euros including bonuses.
Bassey impressed in Rangers’ Europa League campaign last season which led to the final. He was under contract with Rangers until mid-2024. Bassey arrived in Austria on Wednesday to join the training camp of Ajax.
In Amsterdam, the left-footed central defender succeeds Argentinian Lisandro Martinez, who left for Manchester United last Sunday. Ajax and Manchester United reached an agreement on a transfer fee of 57.37 million euros, which can run up to 67.37 million euros through variables.
Sebastien Haller signs for Dortmund from Ajax
Forward Sebastien Haller Wednesday signed for Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund from Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam as a free agent.
The 28-year-old former Eintracht Frankfurt striker returns to the Bundesliga after putting pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Black and Yellows.
“We are very pleased that with Sebastien Haller we were able to sign a seasoned striker who caused a sensation in the Champions League. He also knows the Bundesliga and has already proven his class and quality in front of the goal,” said Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl.
Haller knows the Bundesliga very well as he played for the “Eagles” from 2017 until 2019 to provide 24 goals in 60 competitive matches. He most recently finished the season as a top scorer (21 goals) in the Dutch Eredivisie and ended up in third in the Champions League goal-getters standings after marking 11 goals, behind Robert Lewandowski (13) and Karim Benzema (15).
“It is a great stadium, but the greatest stadium is nothing without supporters. I can hardly wait to be able to feel the support of more than 80,000 spectators. Hopefully we will achieve great things together in the coming years,” Haller told the club’s official website.
Dortmund’s new arrival received number 9 after the departure of Erling Haaland.
The eight-time German champions clash with lower league side TSV 1860 Munich in the first round in the German Cup on July 27 before they host Bayer Leverkusen for their Bundesliga opener on August 6.
Bayern complete the signing of Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax
Bayern Munich and Ajax Monday agreed on the transfer of Ryan Gravenberch as the 20-year-old midfielder signed a five-year deal until 2027 at Allianz Arena.
Gravenberch had a contract at Ajax until mid-2023. According to Ajax, the transfer fee is 18.5 million euros (19.4 million U.S. dollars), which could run up to 24 million euros including bonuses.
Last month, Bayern also signed Noussair Mazraoui from Ajax. The 24-year-old right back moved to Munich on a free transfer and signed a contract until 2026 with the German record champions.
A product of the Ajax youth academy, Gravenberch made his debut in the first team on September 23, 2018 against PSV. He played 103 official matches for Ajax in which he scored 12 goals.
Gravenberch captured the Dutch championship three times with Ajax, in 2019, 2021 and 2022, and the Dutch Cup in 2019 and 2021. He already collected 10 caps for the Netherlands and scored one goal for his country.
“When the offer came from FC Bayern, I didn’t have to think about it for long,” Gravenberch told on his new club’s website. “FC Bayern are one of the biggest clubs around; players from all over the world want to play for this club. I’m coming to Munich to win lots of titles.”
Ajax confirm Alfred Schreuder as ten Hag replacement
Reports from Netherlands reveal Dutch champions Ajax and Belgian league leaders Club Brugge have greed on the move of manager Alfred Schreuder to Amsterdam.
Schreuder will sign a two-year contract with an option for a third year after this season at Club Brugge, with which he is set to capture the Belgian title. He succeeds Erik ten Hag, who secured his second consecutive Dutch championship with Ajax on Wednesday. Ten Hag leaves Ajax by the end of this season for Manchester United.
49-year-old Schreuder was previously active as assistant coach to Ten Hag at Ajax from January 2018 until 2019. He moved on as head coach of Hoffenheim, was then assistant to Ronald Koeman at FC Barcelona and started as head coach of Club Brugge in January 2022.
“Becoming head coach at Ajax is an honor and a great opportunity, that I will grab with both hands,” Schreuder stated in a press release by Ajax. “I’m also excited to return here because I enjoyed the one and a half years I’ve worked at Ajax very much. I wish to win prizes here in Amsterdam, with a team that plays attractive football.”
“But first I want to end the season with Club Brugge successfully,” Schreuder added. “I want to say goodbye with a title, that is very important to me and I will do my absolute best to accomplish that.”
Ajax win record 36th Eredivisie title
Ajax won their record 36th Dutch Eredivisie title after comfortably beating SC Heerenveen 5-0 in the penultimate round in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
The club’s 36th league crown is the third in charge for outgoing coach Erik ten Hag, who will end his five-year stint at Ajax at the close of the season to become Manchester United manager.
After Nicolas Tagliafico opened the scoring for Ajax, Steven Berghuis added a second goal and Sebastien Haller converted a penalty to make it 3-0 in the first half that the audience in the Johan Cruijff Arena were already celebrating at half-time.
Five minutes from time, substitute Brian Brobbey netted the fourth goal before adding a fifth in the final minutes.
Also on Wednesday, PSV beat NEC 3-2 in Eindhoven and third-placed Feyenoord won 1-0 at Go Ahead Eagles thanks to a goal by Bryan Linssen.
Ajax sits top of the standings with 82 points from 33 matches and secured a direct ticket for next season’s Champions League, while PSV is second with 78 points and will have to play the Champions League preliminary round next season. Feyenoord is third with 71 points.
PEC Zwolle will be relegated from the Eredivisie after 10 years in the top flight following a 2-0 defeat at Sparta Rotterdam. The 34th and last round of the 2021-22 season is scheduled to take place on May 15.
