New CAF inter-club season kicks off

58 clubs are in the running to succeed Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco in the Champions League, while 50 clubs, including defending champions RS Berkane, have committed to take part in the 2022-2023 Confederation Cup season.

In the continent’s most prestigious inter-club competition, Malawi’s Nyasa Big Bullets must overcome Tanzanian side Simba while Ambitious Djibouti club Arta Solar will face Al Merreikh of Sudan.

Six clubs have been exempted from the first round. These are defending champions Wydad AC, Esperance Sportive de Tunis, Raja CA, Al Ahly, TP Mazembe and finally Mamelodi Sundowns.

In the Confederation Cup, the first matches promise some great battles. To be followed in the first round, the duel between AS Douanes of Burkina Faso and AS Real Bamako of Mali. Another exciting preliminary clash is between Milo FC of Guinea who take on Togolese club ASCK.

Fourteen clubs were exempted from the first preliminary round and they will enter the competition in the next round including reigning champions RS Berkane from Morocco, former winners Hearts of Oak of Ghana as well Algeria’s JS Saoura and Pyramids of Egypt.

The first-leg of the matches of the first preliminary round will be played from September 9 to 11 with the return matches scheduled to be played a week later.

The matches of the second round of the qualifiers will take place at the start of October.

Gor Mahia qualify to CAF Confederation Cup play-offs

Kenya’s Gor Mahia FC have qualified for the play-off round of the CAF Confederation Cup without kicking a ball.

This is after the second leg of their match against Ahly Merowe of Sudan was canceled on Sunday morning .

The record 19-time Kenyan league champions will advance to the group stages of the second-tier continental club football competition if they win their two-legged play-off tie against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

Gor came from behind to win 3-1 in the opening leg of their second-round preliminary round knockout tie in Egypt a week ago for a healthy advantage going into the second leg that was scheduled for Nairobi on Sunday.

However, the Sudanese side had not arrived for the return leg and on Sunday morning, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the fixture was off via a letter emailed to both clubs by the Manager of Interclub Competitions, Emad Shenouda.

“Reference the above-mentioned match, we would like to inform you that the Sudanese federation has communicated the withdrawal of the club Ahly Merowe from the competition.

“Accordingly, we hereby inform you that the match is cancelled and that Gor Mahia have been qualified to the Additional 2nd Preliminary round of the competition,” CAF said in its letter.

The continental governing body requested Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to proceed with the payment of all financial dues to the officials who were already in Kenya.

A disciplinary process against Merowe is now expected to be launched with Shenouda saying a detailed decision will be communicated to all concerned parties in due course.

The cancellation brought an anti-climactic end to the match that had been mired in confusion since Thursday when Gor announced the government had allowed them to sell tickets to up to 10,000 fans.

A day later, the government confirmed fans would be allowed back to the stadiums for the first time since the onset of the global pandemic in March 2020, with venues allowed to let in up to two-thirds of the capacity subject to meeting coronavirus containment conditions.

However, later on Friday evening, FKF announced CAF had not sanctioned the return of fans to watch the game, igniting furious debate in domestic circles.

The final nail in the confusion came with the fixture being called off altogether on Sunday.

Morocco’s Raja Casablanca win CAF Confederation Cup

RABAT, July 10 (Xinhua) –– Morocco Raja Club Athletic beat Algerian side JS Kabilye 2-1 to win the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup in Cotonou, Benin, on Saturday.

Soufiane Rahimi and Ben Malango scored for Raja within the first quarter of an hour of the game.

Kabilye came back stronger in the second half with Mohamed Zakaria Boulahia halving the deficit just moments into the second half.

Raja were reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute when Omar Arjoune was sent off for a high boot but managed to ensure the victory and their second Confederation Cup title.

Moroccan King Mohammed VI congratulated the team on their win for making Morocco proud, official news agency MAP said.

“My sincere congratulations to the team for their honorable performance,” said Mohammed VI in a phone call with the club President.

Algeria’s ES Setif to play South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in Ghana

ACCRA, March 3 (Xinhua) — The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has selected the Accra Sports Stadium as the venue for next week’s Total CAF Confederation Cup game between Algerian side ES Setif and Orlando Pirates of South Africa, the Ghana Football Association announced on its official site Wednesday.

The game which was originally scheduled for Setif, Algeria on March 10, has been moved to the Ghanaian capital because the Algerian government has suspended all sea and air travels between it and some African countries and regions including South Africa.

As a result, the GFA was called upon for Accra to host the match. All stakeholders have been informed and are ready and eager to extend the usual Ghanaian hospitality to the participating clubs.

Setif will be making their second trip to Accra in three weeks following last month’s contest against Asante Kotoko which they won 2-1.

The GFA said it is working closely with the government Covid-19 response team to ensure that officials and players of both clubs go through the necessary COVID-19 protocols during their stay in Ghana.

Napsa Stars’ Calabar wary of Gor Mahia threat in CAF Confederation Cup

David ‘Calabar’ Owino has warned his steam Napsa Stars to be wary of Gor Mahia in their preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Zambian club has been paired with the Kenyan champions who were eliminated from the CAF Champions League. The Kenya defender has stated his teammates will have to be clinical in front of the goal to stand a chance of getting into the group stages.

“As Napsa we have to go with a very strong mentality because Gor Mahia is not a pushover,” Owino told the club’s media team.

“Though they are struggling financially, they are very experienced in continental competitions.  

“Most of their players are in the national team and are experienced when it comes to these competitions. They will want to score first and show they are better than us. 

“So it will be difficult but my teammates have to be mentally strong, fight for each other and try as much as possible to come out with something positive. We go out there, fight for a positive result, come and finish it at home.”

The veteran defender has further revealed how it feels playing at home, where he started his game.

“Gor Mahia is a good team, they have been playing in the continental assignments for some time,” the former Zesco United defender continued.

“So as Napsa, all we have to do is prepare adequately. It is not going to be easy but if we prepare well, become mentally strong and work as a team, we will stand a chance of advancing to the group stage.   

“It is always a pleasure going back to play in the pitches you started from, where people know you much better. Coming to this competition is all about work and the team you are representing.  

“For me as a player is to do my work and ensure my team wins.” 

Winners and losers ahead of CAF CL, Confed Cup draws

African football football body, CAF, will have to come up with a decision regarding the aborted match between Rivers United and Bloemfontein Celtic ahead of Friday’s CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup draws.

The tie between Nigerian side Rivers and South African outfit was called off after the latter failed to follow the Covid-19 regulations.

“The Nigerian Football Federation stated that the South African delegation could not be exempted from the required quarantine,” CAF said in a statement.

But now CAF will have to make a decision on the next course of action with just a day to the draw of the two inter club competitions set for Friday  in Cairo

“The case will be submitted to the competent body within CAF to decide on the appropriate course of action to follow,” said CAF.

Only aggregate winners from the CAF Champions League and CAF Confed Cup, second Preliminary Round, will take place in the Group Stage draw.

For Confed Cup, the aggregate winners of the second preliminary round will face the aggregate losers from the CAF Champions League second Preliminary Round.

The preliminary round, that concluded on Wednesday, January 6, was characterized by drama and disappointments as giants such as Raja Casablanca fell on the first attempt while a Senegalese club made it to the group stages for first time in 17 years.

While Egyptian side Zamalek, last season’s losing finalists, had a a bye to the Group Stages, Chad suffered the biggest setback after two of the country’s representatives, Gazelle FC and Renaissance FC were both disqualified.

Elsewhere, GD Sagrada Esperança of Angola withdrew from the competition.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates of South Africa qualified to the next round through the additional second preliminary round, same as Algerian outfit ES Setif.

East Africa will be represented in the CAF Champions League by Simba of Tanzania.

Elsewhere, a Senegalese team made it to the CAF Champions League for the first time since 2004. Teungueth knocked out Raja Casablanca, a former three-time continental champion, and last year’s semi finalist, in a post match penalty, to storm the group stages.

Raja dropped to the CAF Confed Cup, which they won in 2018.

They will grace the second tier, alongside Kenya’s record champions, Gor Mahia, who suffered a humiliating 8-1 aggregate defeat to another Moroccan side CR Belouizdad.

AS Kigali ejects Uganda’s KCCA in CAF Confederation Cup

KAMPALA, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) — Rwanda’s AS Kigali advanced to the play-off round of the CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday despite a 3-1 loss to Ugandan side KCCA FC.

Kigali advanced on away goals as the two teams tied 3-3 on aggregate, after the Rwandan side had been awarded a 2-0 win in last month’s first leg tie without kicking a ball, as KCCA had failed to raise enough players to start the after a series of positive Covid-19 tests.

Brian Aheebwa scored twice in the first half to put the Ugandan team 2-0 up. Kigali tried to fight back, but found KCCA goalkeeper Charles Lukwago up to the task.

In the second half, Kigali were awarded a penalty after 49 minutes when Aboubakar Lawal was brought down in the box by KCCA defender Musa Ramathan.

Striker Muhadjiri Hakizimana stepped up and converted the spot-kick. Aheebwa completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute to make it 3-1, but KCCA could not find a decisive fourth goal.

“We did not achieve what we wanted and it is unfortunate. We had the chances to score more goals, but failed,” said a disappointed KCCA coach Mike Mutebi after the game.

Kigali head coach Eric Nshimiyimana said he was happy with his team after they progressed on aggregate. “We started poorly, but the boys fought back to get an important goal,” said Nshimiyimana.

Namungo into third preliminary round of CAF Confed Cup despite El Hilal scare

Namungo FC sealed passage to the final preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup after playing to a 3-3 draw with 10-man  El Hilal El Obeid to advance on a 5-3 aggregate win.

The 2019/20 Tanzanian FA Cup finalists came into the match with a 2-0 advantage that came from the first leg. Ghanaian striker Stephen Sey and Sixtus Sabilo had scored in the first leg.

And it took the Ghanaian just two minutes to score away in Sudan after a low start by the hosts.

However, a crazy seven minutes saw the Sudanese outfit get three goals to send the Tanzanian outfit into a panic mode.

Hussein Galangat levelled matters after just 13 minutes after capitalising on a defensive error.

A minute later, Hilal Altabaldy managed to get another goal this time around from Ibrahim Ainsoor.

The third goal for the hosts was scored in the 19th minute by Galangat and Obayed needed to stay put and get another goal to make it to the next stage of the competition.

It was not going to be easy as expected as three minutes later, the brace hero Galangat received his marching orders for a reckless challenge against an opponent.

Namungo capitalized on the numerical advantage, and in the 39th minute they scored their second of the match through Blaise Bigirimana, before completing a comeback with an equalizer in the 50th minute courtesy of Charles Manyama.

So far, DRC Motema Pembe, Pyramids of Egypt, Cameroon’s Cotonsport and JS Kabylie of Algeria have made it to the final round of the competition.

In the CAF Champions League, Zamalek of Egypt qualified for the group stage after getting a walkover against Gazelle. Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa have also qualified alongside Al Ahly of Egypt.

AS Kigali says ready to face off with KCCA FC in CAF Confederation Cup

KAMPALA, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) — Rwandan football club Association Sportive de Kigali (AS Kigali) on Tuesday said it is ready to face off with Uganda’s KCCA FC in a return leg of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup on Wednesday.

Eric Nshimiyimana, head coach of AS Kigali told Xinhua here that they are in Uganda for a win, which will let the Rwanda side qualify for the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

“We have prepared well and believe we have what it takes to eliminate KCCA FC,” Nshimiyimana said.

According to the competition rules, CAF awarded the first leg match to AS Kigali as a 2-0 victory because KCCA FC last month failed to present 11 starting players and four substitutes. This was after some KCCA FC players failed COVID-19 tests. Nshimiyimana said AS Kigali is determined to make its own history.

“We shall need to get an early goal so that we settle in well,” the coach said.

KCCA FC, who will have most of its players return after testing negative for COVID-19, has also vowed to turn tables.

“We know it will be a tough match, but we are determined to come all out and get the result that can take us to the next round,” said KCCA FC assistant coach Morley Byekwaso.
