Rwandan coach Andre Cassa Mbungo has opted for a financially stable Kenyan club instead of continental football after he preferred Bandari to Gor Mahia.
A coachless Gor Mahia had reportedly joined the chase for the signature of former AFC Leopards tactician, but Mbungo, who walked out of his contract with Ingwe over non payment, was outrightly convinced to move to Mombasa by the financial might of the Kenya Ports Authority owned-Bandari.
Interestingly, Bandari are only taking part in the domestic competition unlike Gor Mahia who are playing the CAF Champions League and one would have expected that Mbungo would choose Gor for exposure that comes with continental football. Instead, he opted for money over fame and exposure.
He’s set to be unveiled on Monday where he will officially take over from Ken Odhiambo, who was snapped up by Sofapaka.
Even more disturbing news for Gor Mahia fans is the fact that assistant coach Patrick Odhiambo is set to cross over to Bandari as Mbungo’s assistant.
The coaching position at K’Ogalo fell vacant after Brazilian Roberto Oliveira was disqualified from overseeing any CAF competition due to lack of proper coaching papers.
Gor Mahia was forced to rope in the services of a coach Sammy Omollo who still has a running contract with fellow Kenyan Premier League side Posta Rangers.
Sadly though, on Saturday, the caretaker coach received a scathing attack from Gor Mahia official who accused him of “lack of a clear strategy” in the humiliating 6-0 defeat to Algerian side CR Belouizdad, just a week ago.
Mbungo is set to take home a six figure salary among other benefits.
Gor Mahia players have been staging a go slow for the past week over unpaid dues. The team is yet to have a full house training ahead of the crucial second leg match against the Moroccans on Wednesday.
