Kapaito, the reigning KPL top scorer may be way off from hitting the 17-goal mark-he achieved last season, but his late found form, despite a nagging injury proved crucial for Sharks in the Slums Derby at the Kasarani Stadium.
Kapaito poked home the opener from close range after he beat the rest to Eric Juma’s cross. Abuya then added a second as Sharks cruised to a two-goal lead at the break.
Clifford Alwanga then halved Sharks’ advantage, but substitute Masaba restored the two-goal lead at the hour-mark. Nyakeya slotted his 14th goal of the season from the spot after Boniface Onyango had handled the ball inside the box, but Sharks held on to force a slim victory.
Meanwhile, Gor Mahia maintained a seven-point lead following a 2-0 win over Chemelil Sugar in Kisumu.
Kenneth Muguna and Samuel Onyango goals were all K’Ogalo needed to maintain a safe gap from Sofapaka, whom they will meet next. Sofapaka beat Western Stima by the same score line.
Elsewhere, Ugandan William Wadri and goalkeeper Farouk Shikhalo inspired Bandari to a 2-0 victory over host Vihiga United while Zoo Kericho came from a goal down to force a draw against AFC Leopards’ in a one-all draw.
Johnstone Ligare’s 86th minute header cancelled out Paul Were’s first half goal for Ingwe at the Kenyatta Stadium.
Goals from Erick Kapaito, Julius Masaba and former Mathare United forward Duke Abuya were enough to sink the ‘Slum Boy’ whose late rally to salvage a point went up in smoke despite a late goal by Cliff Nyakeya from the spot.
