Long hitting Dismas Indiza from Mumias Golf Club beat Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi by two shots to claim the third leg of the 2020 Safari Tour golf series at the par 72 Vet Lab Sports Club course Wednesday. 

Indiza who started the day with a five shots lead, carded one over par 73, his second in two days, for an all round total of four under par 284, to take home the first cash prize of Sh150,000. 

He blamed his second shots for his lower aggregate, as well as the tough pin positions on the otherwise well nurtured greens. 

“I missed a number of greens because of my second shots. I think because I was a bit tense, but all the same I am happy beating such a strong field of young and tough professionals’’ said Indiza who got off well, picking up a birdie at the first hole but missed the greens on the third, fifth and sixth and three putted the 17th at the back nine. 

“After making my birdie at the first hole, I realised the others were making one mistake after another and this kind of gave me the strength to hold onto my lead’’ added Indiza who said his win has given him the confidence to try and play well at Sigona and in Uganda where he said he would like to win. 

“I started the season badly, I think because of having stayed for some times without competition, but now my game is fine.’’

Chinhoi also blamed the pin positions for not playing better , saying the greens are hilly and so when the pins are put on sloppy areas where the ball can stop, it becomes very difficult for one to score well. 

“I had a very good chance of winning the event if I didn’t miss many birdie chances, though I lost the tournament at the par three- sixth hole where I made three putts from a position I should not have missed. We come here not just to make money but also enjoy the game but when you put the pins in some crazy places, it really makes the situation rather difficult,’’ said Chinhoi who birdied the fourth after dropping a shot at the third hole. 

He then birdied the 13th and 15th to finish the back nine on two under par and the day’s one under 71 which gave him a total of two under par 286 and a cheque of Sh70,000 having won Sh150,000 at Royal where he won the second leg with an impressive nine under par. 

Nothing however worked for Muthaiga’s Greg Snow who dropped three shots at the front nine where he did not make a single birdie and despite starting the back nine with a birdie, he made four straight bogeys from the 13th to the 16th for a poor six over par 78, to drop from third to sixth place on seven over par total of 295. 

 Meanwhile, home pro Edwin Mudanyi fired the day’s best round of three under par 69 to finish in third place on three over par 291. His round included three birdies at the front nine against a single bogey at the sixth while at the back nine. Mudanyi dropped a shot at the 14th but recovered two shots at the 15th and 16th. 

With the third leg now done, the focus now shifts to the hilly Sigona Golf Club this weekend for the fourth leg of the tour which is expected to start with the Pro-Am on Saturday with the first round set for Sunday morning.

Indiza clings to lead at VetLab

Mumias based Dismas Indiza remained at the top of the leader board going into today’s final round of the Safari Tour third leg at VetLab Sports Club, though his lead was reduced to only four shots by Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi during yesterday’s third round.

Chinhoi shot one under par 71, the only one in the third round, to bring his total to one under par 215 in second place while the long hitter Indiza who started the day on six under par, shot one over 73 for a total of five under 211.

He will once again be accompanied by Chinhoi and third placed and defending champion Greg Snow in today’s final round from 8.30am.

“Today my driving and even approach shots were not very good though it is putting that helped me to stay at the top. My biggest challenge is to try and hold on to the lead tomorrow’’ said Indiza who dropped shots over the first, third, and sixth on the front nine, and at the 11th and 14th at the back nine.

He, however, managed to build up on his two first nine birdies at the fourth and fifth, with two more at the back nine.

He made a birdie at the 16th then drove to the green in the 366-yards par four-18th where he missed a two club by two feet, to close the day with an easy birdie. Chinhoi dropped to the left of the green at the 18th, chipped on well to also birdie the hole for his one under par score.

He had birdied the 13th having collected four birdies at the front nine where he also dropped two shots and one at the back nine’s 10th.

“The wet condition of the course real affected my game though I am happy to finish the round on under par score. All the same, I made some wrong decesions in some holes which costed me some shots though I now have the chance to chase for the top in the final round’’ said Chnhoi who won the second leg at Royal.

Besides Chinhoi’s one under par, the next best round for the day, was Snow’s level par 72 which gave him a total of one over par total of 217. He will be trying and beat the six shots gap from the leader in the closing round which will be do or die for the 51 year old Indiza who missed cut in the first leg at Limuru.

Dismas Indiza leading by six shots at Vet Lab

Mumias-based Dismas Indiza remained at the top of the leaderboard after a perfect round of four under 68 in the second round of the 2020 Safari Tour series third leg at the par 72 Vet Lab Sports Club course in Nairobi on Monday.

Indiza, who missed the cut in the first leg at Limuru two weeks ago, said he was hitting the ball well from the tees and putted well though the pins were not very friendly but unlike in the first round.

“My only bad hole was the par four-10th where I hit the right trees, tried to come out, but went even further right, and though I finally came onto the green on four, made two putts, to double bogey the hole’’ said Indiza who had birdied the first and sixth, picked up an eagle at the seventh, then birdied the 12th and 14th at the back nine, to top the leaderboard.

“Its now game on in the last two rounds where I intend to try and stay up by making some more birdies if possible,’’ added Indiza who was six clear shots from hot charging Robson Chinhoi of Zimbabwe who shot one under par 71 for a level par 144 going into Tuesday’s third round.Sa

Second leg winner Chinhoi, birdied the sixth and seventh, made a bogey at the ninth, started the back nine well, firing in a birdie at the down-hilly 10th, but dropped two shots at the 12th with one recovery at the 13th for the day’s 71 that put him in second place just a shot better than Greg Snow who posted two under par 70 for one over 145.

Muthaiga’s Greg Snow, a winner of the first leg at Limuru last week, made a slow start, dropping a shot at the first hole though he quickly recovered it at the second hole. He later birdied the seventh, and the 14th and 15th at the back nine where he however started with a bogey at the 10th.

But what a day it was for the home pro Nelson Simwa who was leading on six under par after 11 holes, after making birdies on fifth, seventh, ninth and 10th holes. His problems started at the 11th where he missed a close one for a par, then dropped one more shot at the 13th.

It was, however, at the 14th hole where he threw away everything after blocking his shot to out of bound, for a quick eight. He never recovered after that as he bogeyed the 15th, 17th and 18th for four over par 76, to drop to fourth place on two over par total of 146.

“I was firing until I picked that eight at the 14th, and my mind just went off. I could not concentrate anymore, which made me drop three more shots thereafter. But I will try and play eight or so under in the remaining two rounds. I am still capable of winning the tournament if I don’t encounter another bad hole tomorrow,’’ said Simwa who is sponsored by the betting company Betika.

A total of 20 players made the seven over par cut and will now battle it out for the top cash prize of Sh105,000. It was tough for others like Golf Park’s Eric Ooko who missed the cut by just a shot despite shooting level par 72 in the second round.

Simwa, Indiza share lead in opening round of third Safari Tour

A stiff competition was experienced at the opening round of the third leg of the 2020 Safari Tour series as home player Nelson Simwa and long-hitting Dismas Indiza both  returned two under par 70, to finish joint top on the leader board at the par 72 Vet Lab Sports Club course.

Starting at the back nine, the Betika sponsored Simwa, took off well, picking up an early birdie at the down-hilly par four-10th, and an identical score at the 12th, 18th and at the start of the front nine.

He however dropped two shots at the fifth and seventh holes for the day’s two under par, to tie with the senior pro Indiza.

“The pin positions were a bit tough for me, I managed to find my way out, save for the two holes. I had a good tee-shot and a good six-iron shot at the fifth hole but had a bad approach shot’’ said Simwa.

“The course particularly the greens are in good condition though because of the pin positions, one can very easily make three putts’’ added Simwa who said his strategy this week is to try and play two under par per round and see how far he can go.

For the long hitter Indiza, the day did not start well as he dropped a shot right from the word go, but managed to recover well first with an eagle three at the par five-fifth, then birdied the seventh. A double bogey at the 14th almost ruined the day, though he managed to par the remaining holes, to at least tie with the home player Simwa.

Last year, Indiza lost the Vet Lab in a play off with Muthaiga’s Greg Snow who started this year’s “Road to Magical Kenya Open’’ campaign with a victory at Limuru though he later came third at Royal Nairobi during last week’s second leg.

“I played nine holes at Royal on Friday then came to Vet Lab for an 18 holes to see how the course was, and that really helped to understand the greens well here’’ said Indiza who revealed that he started the season badly but he hopes to catch up in the remaining events.

“My strength today was  chipping and putting though I still have to polish them up before tomorrow’s second round’’ said the Mumias-based Indiza who missed the cut at Limuru but tied for 15th at Royal.

Meanwhile Sigona’s John Wangai was two shots off the leaders in third place after levelling the course as Malawi’s Paul Chidale, Robson Chinhoi from Zimbabwe, Jacob Okello from Golf Park and Railway’s Samuel Njoroge tied for fourth on one over par 73 each.

The second round of the One million shillings event gets under way for the remaining 46 players who went through the first round cut of 85 gross and better.

Bumper entry: Over 50 European players locked out of Magical Kenya Open

About 50 European golfers are set to miss the 2020 Magical Kenya Open Golf Championship with the organizers reporting oversubscription.

The European Tour event is set to be held in Nairobi for the second year running between March 12-15 at the Karen Country Club.  

Patrick Obath, the tournament director, revealed Monday that the annual championship has received over 200 entries from European tour players with only 144 set to be picked.

“The field this year will remain at 144 players. We have, however, seen a significant increase in interest from the European Tour players to come play at the Magical Kenya Open, with over 200 entries received,” Obath said.

Among the entrants are the tournament’s last five winners led by the defending champion Guido Migliozzi, Lorenzo Gagli (2018), Aaron Rai (2017), Sebastian Soderberg (2016) and Haydn Porteous (2015).

Others big names include Chris Wood, winner of the 2016 BMW PGA Championship; Justin Harding who won the 2019 Qatar Masters; Ashun Wu, winner of the 2018 KLM Open; five-time European Tour champion Alexander Levy; Shubhankar Sharma (2018 Maybank Championship) and Haoton Li who won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic two years ago.

The big number was realized despite the fact that there will be no change in the prize fund that stands at 1.1 million Euros; with the overall winner banking 183,330 Euros .

The eight local players (Kenya) will be led by Dismas Indiza, the overal winner of the East Africa Safari Tour, Greg Snow and Simon Ngige.

 Five names of Kenyan elite amateurs who were selected by the Kenya Golf Union include Samuel Njoroge, Daniel Nduva, Paul Muchangi, Taimur Malik and Mutahi Kabungu. They will be joined by Victor Joseph of Tanzania who has been invited to play.

Apart from the local professionals, Robinson Chinhoi of Zimbabwe and Nigeria’s Andrew Odoh, were the two regional players who qualified through the Safari Tour. 

Organizers have also extended invitations to two South African players, Toto Thimba (winner of the 2019 Karen Masters) and Jayden Schaper.

Dismas Indiza beats five-time EA Safari Tour winner Greg Snow to overall ranking

Kenyan Dismas Indiza beat five-time East Africa Safari Golf Tour winner Greg Snow on Wednesday to claim the overall title of the Road to Kenya Open Ranking following the conclusion of the 11-Series regional tournament in Nairobi, Kenya. 

Indiza will thus lead the eight-member Kenyan squad that also include Simon Ngige, Snow, Erik Ooko, David Wakhu, CJ Wangai, Riz Charania and Jastas Madoya who have all booked their places on the 2020 Kenya Open Golf Championship set to be staged in Kenya later in the year. 

Robson Chinhoi and Nigerian Andrew Odoh are the two regional players who also sailed through the Safari Tour.  

Two other regional players, Toto Thimba and Jayden Schaper from South Africa, have been invited to play at the tournament.  

Snow shot an impressive round of 68 on the last day of the final leg of the 2019/2020 season to grab his fifth title of the series that culminated at the Karen County Golf Club, with a total score of 4-under par 280.

Snow opened the season with a victory at Nyali that hosted the first leg then Thika Green, Muthaiga and Sigona only to conclude the season with a victory in Nairobi. 

Indiza, meanwhile, won just two legs but still finished top of Snow who clinched the overall title.

Indiza completed the podium places after he ended his Karen Country Club campaign with a round of 72 to take his total to 2-over par 286; having carded 36 on the front nine and another 36 on the back nine. For his performance, he took home KSh240,000.

 At the same time, Thika Golf Club’s Simon Ngige shot an impressive round of 2-under par 69 to take his total for the tournament to 1-over par 285, seeing him clinch second place and banking KSh300,000.

 He started off his round with a total of 32 on the front nine having holed birdies at the second, sixth, seventh and ninth and having dropped a single shot at the fifth. 

On the back nine, he had a tough outing, carding 37 courtesy of bogeys at the 11th, 13th, 15th and having only holed birdies at the 12th and the 17th.

Zimbabwe golfer, Robinson Chinhoi, ended his outing at the tournament as the highest ranked regional player after he shot the lowest score of the week, a 4-under 67 taking his total to 4-over 288. He finished tied in fifth alongside Muthaiga’s Geoffrey Makokha. 

On his part, Zambian Madalitso Muthiya finished in eighth place with a 5-over par 289 score.

 Season Three of the Safari Tour resumes starting May this year with an increased number of tournaments across four East African countries – Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Race for Magical Kenya Open intensifies as Snow chases series leader Indiza

The battle for qualification to the 2020 Magical Kenya Open is set to intensify as the 2019/20 Safari tour heads to Sigona Golf club from the 25th to 29th of January for the ninth leg.

With a total of 10 players set to qualify for the European Tour event through the Safari Tour, Sigona will offer the professionals an opportunity to score valuable tour points with two legs still left on the card.

Dismas Indiza currently leads the standings with 330.6 points, with Thika Golf Club’s Simon Ngige in second, while three-time series winner Greg Snow, Erick Ooko, David Wakhu, Riz Charania, Kopan Timbe and Justus Madoya rounding up the top eight local PROs slots for the Kenya Open so far.

Nigeria’s Andrew Odoh Oche and Uganda’s Philip Kasozi currently occupy the two slots reserved for regional players in 13th and 14th place respectively.

Last year’s Safari tour winner Snow heads to Sigona as a firm favourite to lift the title after back-to-back wins at Thika Greens and Muthaiga to add to the opening win in Nyali, but he is expected to face stiff competition from the current series leader Indiza, who will be looking to get back to winning ways after faltering at Thika and Muthaiga.

Great Rift Valley’s Justus Madoya who blew hot and cold at Muthaiga will be another player to watch out for, alongside Ngige and David Wakhu. Royal Nairobi Golf club’s Erick Ooko will also be out for a good performance, after failing to make the cut during the Muthaiga leg.

At the same time, the Kenya Breweries Limited through its Johnnie Walker brand, has announced a sponsorship for the Hole-In-One prize at the Sigona and Karen legs of the Safari Tour; as well as the PRO-AM prizes for both events.

KBL’s Head of Marketing International Spirits and Reserve Grace Nshemeire- Gwaku, expressed the company’s delight in being part of the Safari Tour, reiterating its commitment to continue supporting the growth of sport in the country.

Action at the Sigona Golf club will tee off on the 25th with a Pro-Am event, where a projected field of 200 players are set to participate, before the professionals take center stage from the 26th to the 29th.

From Sigona, Safari tour action will move to the Uganda Golf Club for the Kitante Open, from the 12th – 15th of February, paving way for the last leg the Karen Country Club from the 22nd– 25th of February.

Indiza takes Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort title

Dismas Indiza played a round of 1-under par, 70, to take his overall score to 1-over par, 285, to clinch the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort, Safari Tour title.

Indiza started the round with six strokes behind overnight leader, Simon Ngige and with the two drawn to play alongside each other from the last group, it was always going to be an exciting end to the tournament for the hard-hitting Johnnie Walker-sponsored golfer.

Ngige opened the round with a birdie on the par-4 first. Indiza, however bogeyed on the same round but tables turned with reversed scores on the par-4 second, as Indiza hit birdie while Ngige dropped a shot.

It was a bad evening for the unlucky Ngige who dropped two more shots on the third, with Indiza holding par.

Despite dropping a shot at the seventh for a turning score of 2-over par, 37, with Indiza carding 1-over par, 36, he still held on to a slim advantage through the first nine, as he did enough to hold off the eventual winner-Indiza.

At the back nine, Indiza put the pedal to the metal, as Ngige simply failed to keep up.  The two matched each other through holes 10 to 12, posting scores of par, par and bogey. Apart from the par-4 sixteenth, it was the only time Ngige matched Indiza’s score on the back nine.

A bogey and a double bogey on the 14 and 15, by Ngige, respectively, as Indiza held par, saw the two go into the last three holes with Ngige holding a one shot lead.

They would both hold par at the sixteenth, before Indiza birdied the par-5, seventeenth, to tie for the lead heading to the last hole, the par-4, eighteenth. Ngige would hold on for par, as Indiza sunk a 10-foot putt for birdie and the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort, Safari tour title.

“I actually had not realised that I had beaten Ngige and was preparing for a play-off, only for Ngige to congratulate me at the end of the round,” a surprised Indiza said after the final round.

For his troubles, Indiza pocketed Sh105,000 and a maximum 50 ‘Road to the 2020 Magical Kenya Open’ points, to take his total to 290.6 at the top of the standings.

Ngige took home Sh75,000 and posted 48 points to take him into third place on the Road to Kenya Open standings.

Nigeria’s Andrew Oche Odoh finished in third, with a gross score of 4-over par, 288, two shots behind Ngige and three behind the winner. Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi finished in fourth, with a gross score of 292.

Amateur Simon Njogu took full advantage of playing in his home clubto lift the silver, after finishing in seventh place on a score of 294.

Attention now shifts to the Muthaiga Golf Club which will play host of the seventh leg of the 2019/20 Safari Tour from the 14th – 17th of December 2019.

Dismas Indiza tops Lake Victoria Golf Resort leaderboard as Greg Snow melts

Kenyan Dismas Indiza shot an impressive score of 4-under par, 68 Wednesday to storm to the top of the leaderboard of the fifth round of the East Africa Safari Tour at the Lake Victoria Golf Resort Open Golf Tournament.

Indiza leads an all Kenyan top three that includes Vet Lab’s Edwin Mudanyi and Windsor Golf Club’s Sujan Shah.

The Johnnie Walker-sponsored Indiza marked his return to the Lake Victoria Golf Resort course where he set the course record during the 2019 Uganda Open, with an equally impressive round, though a few strokes shy of his round three Uganda Open showing.

The Mumias-based golfer kept his rich vein of form from last week at the Entebbe Open, going with three birdies on the front nine.

However, an equal number of bogeys saw him hold a turning score of one par.

It was at the back nine that he turned on the style, shooting a blemish free nine holes, including four birdies to take his round’s score to 4-under par, 68, one shot ahead of compatriot Mudanyi.

Mudanyi’s round could have earned him first spot, had it not been for a bogey at the par-4 16th, his only dropped shot of the round.

Before this Mudanyi had shot birdies on the sixth, eighth and thirteenth, while holding par through the other holes, a further birdie on the 18th saw him card a round score of 3-under par, 69 to sit a shot a head of Sujan Shah.

A double bogey at the par-5 17th, cancelled out two of Sujan four birdies in the round, but he held on for a 2-under par score, just enough to finish above the trio of Henry Lujja (Uganda), Abbey Bagalana (Uganda) and Golf Park’s David Wakhu, who finished the round with identical scores of 1-under par, 71.

Professional Golfers of Kenya Captain, CJ Wangai is among five players who finished with a score of par, in seventh.

The others are Ronnie Bukenya (Uganda), Ronald Rugumayo (Uganda), Alfred Nandwa and Eric Ooko of Kenya.

It was, however, a challenging day for the 2018-19 Safari tour winner Greg Snow, who shot a round of 2-over par, 74, to place him T17, alongside the 2019 Entebbe Open winner, Justus Madoya.

Round two action tees off at 8:00 AM, with the field of 54 players all jostling to make the cut to play in the third and fourth rounds.

Kenyan Justus Madoya climbed to ninth overall on Road to the 2020 Magical Kenya Open ranking after clinching the 2019 Entebbe Open Golf Tournament.

The fourth round of the 12 series East Africa Safari Tour ended on Saturday in Entebbe, Uganda.

Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort golfer shot a decent round of 68 to take his total for the tournament to 9-under par 275 and a maiden victory at the Safari Tour Golf Series.

His overall point tally ahead of the Magical Kenya now stands at 116.5.

With 275 shots after 72 holes, Madoya ended his Entebbe campaign eight strokes better than the challenger, establishing one of the largest wins in a Safari Tour event and having not played worse than 71 in each round.

His first nine on the final round was bogey-free, holing birdies at the par-4 third and the par-3 sixth for a total of 33.

On the back nine, he holed the round’s lone bogey at the par-3 10th before holing birdies at the par-4 13th and the par-5 18th for a total of 35.

For his stellar performance, Madoya won Sh167,000 (1,670 USD) and picked up maximum 50 points on the road to Kenya Open.

“The fact that we have now had four different winners so far confirms that, the series has become very competitive – which is good for all involved as well as the fans. I believe that if we continue like this, the local players will be more competitive at next year’s Kenya Open,” Madoya said after the rare victory.

Meanwhile, Johnnie-Walker-Sponsored Dismas Indiza finished his tour of Uganda with a decent round of 69 to take his total after 72 holes to 1-under par 283; which was enough to see him finish second.

He carded a total of 33 on the first nine courtesy of birdies at the fourth, eighth and ninth holes with a dropped shot at the seventh.

On the back nine, he carded a total of 36 courtesy of a double bogey on the 15th and birdies on the 14th and 18th.

Indiza amassed a total of 48 that cemented his place at the top of the ranking to the Road to the 2020 Magical Kenya Open with a total of 190.6 points from the four events.

Ugandan Herman Mutaawe finished third overall with a level-par 284 score.

Kopan Timbe tied in fourth place with a 1-over par 285 score, while Johnnie-Walker Sponsored Greg Snow and winner of the Nyali leg, finished in sixth place with a 2-over par 286 score.

With this performance, Snow is now second in the Road to the 2020 Magical Kenya Open ranking with a total of 174 points; while Riz Charania and Simon Ngige are tied in third with 166.6 points apiece.

Action in the 2019-2020 Safari Tour Golf Series resumes next week in Uganda at the Lake Serena Golf Resort Open from the 6th to the 9th of November.
