Real Madrid keep the pressure on with win at home to Eibar
MADRID, April 3 (Xinhua) — Real Madrid moved into second place in La Liga a point ahead of Barcelona and three behind Atletico Madrid, who both play on Sunday, after a straightforward 2-0 win at home to Eibar on Saturday afternoon.
Eibar traveled to Madrid without a win in 11 league games and never looked like changing that statistic for the better in Valdebebas, although it wasn’t until the 42nd minute that Marco Asensio opened the scoring with a smart finish over Marco Dmitrovic in the Eibar goal.
Karim Benzema assured the points in the 73rd minute when he planted a free header into the back on the Eibar net.
Atletico Madrid visit Sevilla on Sunday, while Barca are at home against Valladolid.
Spain international Gerard Moreno widened his lead as the top-scoring Spaniard in La Liga with a hat-trick to take his season’s tally to 19 goals as Villarreal won 3-0 away to Granada.
Moreno scored penalties in the 8th and 59th minutes and a further goal in the 17th minute as Villareal moved into fifth place, ahead of Betis and Real Sociedad, who each have a game in hand.
Saturday’s last league game saw Osasuna and Getafe draw 0-0 in a result that edges both sides closer to safety.
Finally, Rafa Mir gave Huesca hope of avoiding relegation with two goals that gave his side a 2-0 win away to Levante on Friday night.
Benzema’s brace hands Zidane breather as Real beat Eibar 2-1 after early scare
Karim Benzema’s double against Eibar saw Real Madrid get back to winning ways after a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Zinedine Zidane’s second spell at the Bernabeu started with consecutive victories, but his side suffered a 2-1 defeat against Valencia on Wednesday.
They got off to a slow start as Marc Cardona gave the visitors a shock lead, leaving Zidane’s men with it all to do in the second half.
However, Benzema hauled the home side level after the break when he headed in Marco Asensio’s cross.
The French forward completed the turnaround nine minutes from time, converting Toni Kroos’ cross to earn them the points.
Benzema almost completed his hat-trick late on, striking the woodwork, but now has 26 goals in all competitions this season.
Gareth Bale, who was jeered by home supporters earlier in the season, received whistles from the Bernabeu crowd after being ruled offside three times in the first 15 minutes and firing well wide from distance.
There were further whistles as Real left the pitch a goal behind at the interval, and it looked like it may not be the home side’s day when Benzema saw a goal disallowed by the video assistant referee for offside after the break.
Captain Sergio Ramos was rested and left out of the matchday squad entirely, while Thibaut Courtois remained absent as Zidane continued with Keylor Navas in goal. His son, Luca Zidane, was on the bench.
Real remain third in La Liga, 10 points behind leaders Barcelona, who face second-placed Atletico Madrid on Sunday.
Zidane defends left back Marcelo over poor performance during La Liga defeat
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is backing left back Marcelo to find his form after poor performance in the recent past.
The defender’s performances for Real have been below par this season but Zidane is eager to support his player.
The Brazilian did not have one of his best games in Madrid’s 2-1 defeat at Valencia, yet the Frenchman backed the left-back.
The full-back has been a crucial player for Los Blancos in recent years, particularly in Zidane’s first stint as coach.
“Marcelo is Marcelo and I like how he plays,” he told the press conference after the match.
“I like how he plays and I see him in good shape.”
Zidane also revealed his intention to offer Marcelo more playing time until the end of the season.
After having featured in three consecutive games as a starter, the experienced defender will not play against Eibar on Saturday, due to suspension.
With eight games to go, Zidane is eager to help Marcelo recover his form and show off his skills that turned him into one of the best left-back in the world.
