No Champions League football for United next season after Huddersfield draw
Manchester United hopes of Champions League football evaporated after a lethargic draw at bottom club Huddersfield.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side saw any chance of a top four finish dashed as they registered another woeful display.
Luke Shaw’s horror mistake midway through the second half allowed Isaac Mbenza to fire home the crucial equaliser to Scott McTominay’s opener.
And now the club has nothing but pride to fight for against Cardiff next weekend as their season ends in turmoil.
Injuries have hit hard for Solskjaer in the past few weeks, so much so that he was only able to call upon Marcus Rashford as his loan striker from the start.
Alexis Sanchez got a rare start out wide on the left, with McTominay rewarded for looking sharp in training with a place in the midfield.
Both looked to justify their manager’s decision in the opening minutes as United took a grip on the game.
Sanchez was full of running and purpose in the opening minutes, causing problems in the Huddersfield defence.
McTominay opened the scoring eight minutes from the start with Huddersfield keeper Jonas Lossl playing a major part.
McTominay ran in the box nto and drilled a low shot with his left foot straight at Lossl, who then got his feet mixed up and allowed the ball to go past his knees into the net.
The Premier League’s worst side were there for the taking and United continued to take the game to them with Sanchez and Paul Pogba linking up well and making good runs from deep.
But at the end of first half, United the common mistakes started to arrive as the Terriers.
Phil Jones had already lost his man once and been saved by Victor Lindelof before he gave possession away just outside his own area.
And this time he was fortunate that David De Gea stood big to keep out Karlon Grant’s low shot.
Pogba then saw a header cannon back off the crossbar, but by the break there was already the whiff of trouble ahead for the visitors.
Sanchez had disappeared by the time he was substituted with an injury in the 53rd minute.
But worse was to follow on the hour mark when Shaw completely missed a long Lossl clearance to allow Mbenza in to score through the legs of De Gea.
Liverpool put five past Huddersfield to return to top of EPL standing ahead of Barcelona tie
Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League with a 5-0 hammering against relegated Huddersfield Town at Anfield on Friday night.
Goals from Naby Keita, after 17 seconds, and two goals each from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah saw Jurgen Klopp’s side return to the top of the table until at least Sunday when Manchester City face Burnley.
Keita’s goal set a new record for being the fastest goal ever scored by Liverpool in the Premier League.
The hosts doubled their lead soon after when Sadio Mane headed home an Andrew Robertson cross to make it 2-0.Salah made it 3-0 right before half-time with a volley and The Reds were in cruise control.
Two more from Mane and Salah in the second-half added to Hudderfield’s misery and sets a very confident looking Liverpool side up nicely for their trip to Camp Nou on Wednesday.
The three points puts the Merseysiders on 91 points for the season with two games to play, but they’ll need Manchester City to drop points in one of their remaining three matches to have a chance of winning their first Premier League title in 29 years.
Stars captain Wanyama on target as Tottenham hammer Huddersfield 4-0 to go third
Victor Wanyama scored his first EPL goal of the 2018/19 season in Tottenham’s 4-0 victory over Huddersfield on Saturday.
The Kenya skipper got Spurs ahead with a 20th minute goal before Lucas Moura scored the second in quick succession to complete a hat-trick later on.
Wanyama, who also played a key role in the Champions League victory over English rivals, Manchester City in the mid-week victory had struggled with injury for the better part of the first leg.
The goal will be a psychological boost for the Kenyan captain as he works on building his confidence ahead of the June Africa Cup of Nations.
Wanyama is expected to play a vital role for Stars, who will pitch a three week camp in France ahead of the biennial tournament in Cairo, Egypt from June 21 to July 19.
Kenya will kick off the Group C campaign against Algeria then Tanzania and then wind up the group stages with a clash against Senegal. Kenya is returning to the continental stage after missing the last seven editions.
Huddersfield Town relegated from Premier League after losing 2-0 to Crystal Palace
Huddersfield Town have been relegated from Premier League after a 2-0 defeat to host Crystal Palace.
Jan Siewert’s side lost at Selhurst Park and results elsewhere confirm the inevitable, with Southampton and Burnley both picking up wins.
Huddersfield become the first Premier League team since Derby in 2007-2008 to be relegated in March. They have won just once in the league since December.
The defeat is the 24th after 32 games this season confirming their poor show since the league started.
The Terriers surrendered a 3-1 lead at West Ham last time out to lose 4-3 at the London Stadium, a result which leaves them rock bottom on 14 points.
Other results on Saturday
Burnley 2-0 Wolves
Brighton 0-1 Southampton
Crystal Palace 2-0 Huddersfield
Fulham 0-2 Manchester City
Leicester 2-0 Bournemouth
Manchester United 2-1 Watford
Man City get easy win at Huddersfield to keep pace with leaders Liverpool
Manchester City swept past Huddersfield Town 3-0 on Sunday to reduce Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to four points.
Danilo opened the scoring in the 18th minute at the John Smith’s Stadium. But City failed to press home their advantage until early in the second-half.
England international Raheem Sterling added the second in the 54th minute and two minutes later Leroy Sane made it 3-0.
First, the Germany forward whipped in a cross for Raheem Sterling to dive and head in his 12th goal of the season.
Then Sergio Aguero cushioned a header for Sane to run on to and finish past Jonas Lossl.
It was not a vintage display by Pep Guardiola’s side but they remain in title contention.
With Liverpool edging a seven-goal thriller against Crystal Palace on Saturday, City’s mission in Yorkshire was simply to win and stay in touch.
Guardiola tweaked his line-up with Gabriel Jesus, who had scored seven goals in his past three games, dropped to the bench in favour of Aguero, who made his first start since the 2-1 win over Liverpool on 3 January.
David Wagner left the Terriers by mutual consent on Monday with the club bottom of the league, leaving coach Mark Hudson temporarily in charge.
Borussia Dortmund coach Jan Siewert has been approached by Huddersfield for the vacant job, but he will face a mammoth task to keep them in the top flight if he takes over.
This was their ninth defeat in 10 league games and the result leaves the Terriers bottom of the table and 10 points from safety.
Hungry Man City travel to struggling Huddersfield as De Bruyne, Aguero set to start
Kevin De Bruyne and lethal Striker Sergio Aguero are set to return to the team to as Manchester City travel to troubled Huddersfield.
De Bruyne is yet to feature for a full 90 minutes after his recovery from knee injuries, but his substitute appearance Rotherham, Burton and Wolves suggest the Belgian is ready for a permanent return to the first team.
Huddersfield, for all their troubles this season, will provide the bite of a side fighting for their lives at the foot of the table and De Bruyne’s steeliness in midfield is a quality that comes in handy for Guardiola in a fixture of this nature.
De Bruyne should be partnered by Bernardo Silva in front of Fernandinho with the defensive line of Kyle Walker, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Danilo being maintained.
Despite Gabriel Jesus rediscovering his form, Aguero remains the best striker on the books at the Etihad.
After City fell to three defeats in four league games in December, Guardiola knows that there is no room for error between now and the end of the season as City look to keep pace with Liverpool.
Jesus has been a reinvigorated figure in recent weeks – his upturn in form came from a visit from his Brazilian family – and there is little more the 21-year-old could have done to persuade Guardiola of his value to this City team.
David Wagner left Huddersfield by mutual consent on Monday, with Mark Hudson his temporary replacement, and it is hard to imagine the Terries in their new guise will stop City’s onslaught.
Liverpool maintained the gap at the top of the table with a 4-3 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield to complicate matters for rivals City.
Mohamed Salah scored twice – including his 50th Premier League goal – as Liverpool survived a scare by coming from behind to defeat a resolute Crystal Palace in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield.
The Reds led 3-2 as the final whistle of a topsy-turvy match approached, but after James Milner was sent off in the 89th minute for two yellow-card offences, it was a nervy ending as the Premier League leaders desperately tried to hold on to their lead.
The win was ultimately secured when Sadio Mane added a fourth in stoppage time, though there was still time for Max Meyer to score a consolation for the visitors.
Big Sam could take up Huddersfield coaching job after Wagner’s sacking
Sam Allardyce is reportedly in talks with Huddersfield to take over at the John Smith’s Stadium after the sacking of David Wagner.
The former England and Everton boss – who played for the Terriers between 1984 and 1985 – has famously never been relegated from the Premier League, saving the likes of Sunderland and Crystal Palace in recent seasons.
David Wagner left Huddersfield Town in what was reported by Marca as mutual consent, with the club eight points adrift of Premier League safety.
Wagner, who made his name as Jurgen Klopp’s assistant manager at Borussia Dortmund, was a revelation after taking over the Terriers and guided them to promotion in 2017.
The German defied all the odds to keep Huddersfield in the top flight last season but this year has struggled to keep up the pace and the club and Wagner mutually agreed to part ways after amassing just 11 points from 22 games this term.
Huddersfield are expected to make a swift appointment to replace the outgoing fan favourite.
