Muthaiga Golf Club’s Greg Snow, shot an impressive round of 2-under par 69 at the Karen Country Club leg of the Safari Tour golf series to take the lead after Round One of the tournament.
The recently crowned Safari Tour overall winner, got off to a slow start, picking up a bogey on the par-4, third before recovering with back to back birdies on the par-4, fifth and the par-5, sixth for a turning score of 34, having held par on the other five holes.
He looked to be on course for a score of 34, after hitting a birdie at the 12th, before he dropping a shot at the par-4 18th, for a back nine score of 35.
Great Rift Golf Club’s Justus Madoya and amateur Daniel Nduva returned impressive scores of one under par on the round to tie for second place.
Madoya birdied the Par-3, second and par-5 sixth before bogeying at the par-4, third and par-3 fourth in the first nine, he played an impressive round of 35 in the back nine to return an overall score of one under par, 70.
Nduva started off with a bogey at the first, but quickly settled with four birdies in the first nine to return a score of 32, the best of the round.
Further bogeys at the tenth, fifteenth and sixteenth holes saw him return a back nine score of 38 for a round total of one under par, 70.
The trio of David Opati, Simon Ngige and Anil Shah returned scores of par, 71 to tie for third.
Mumias Sugar’s Dismas Indiza had a round to forget, returning a score of 3-over par, 74 placing him T16, one shot behind Windsor’s Rizwan Charania (T13).
The championship is used to give local pros an opportunity to acclimatise to the course ahead of the Magical Kenya Open Championship set for March 13-17 at the same venue.
At least 220 amateur golfers have signed up for this Saturday’s KCB Road to the Masters tournament to be held at Sigona Golf Club.
At stake are six tickets to the prestigious 2019 KCB Karen Masters Pro-Am tournament which will be played on June 25 – 30.
A qualifying tourney for this year’s KCB Masters Pro-Am competition will be run in five clubs across the country – Nyali, Sigona, Thika, Nakuru and Royal.
With a new qualification format, the series adds considerable lure to the Pro-Am tournament that sees amateurs paired alongside top golfers drawn from across the globe.
“The course is excellent and the greens are on a normal pace. With the current weather situation, we are expecting a great day of golf,” Muraya Kariuki, the golf captain at Sigona, said.
The criteria will see the overall winner (men, ladies, staff and guest winners) get automatic qualification, with a wild card for any of the following categories – best first nine, best second nine, nearest to the pin men and lady, junior golfer, longest drive lady and men, given to the additional slot at the discretion of Clubs.
The other events with increased tickets to play at this year’s tournament will also be hosted at Thika Golf Club between April 13, 2019 and Nakuru Golf Club-May 11, 2019.
The final round will be held at Royal Golf Club on June 15, 2019.
A season ticket for the four-day Kenya Open Golf Championship will retail at Sh3,000, the organizers have announced.
The annual championship that has been elevated to European Tour status is set to take place between March 14th and 17th 2019 at the Karen County Golf Club in Nairobi.
The tickets went on sale this week with a day’s ticket going for Sh1,000.
To encourage the uptake of the sport among juniors, the Kenya Open Golf Limited has made provision for children under the age of 12, as well as members of the Junior Golf Foundation, to have free access across the four days.
Meanwhile, Tony Chege overcame a strong field of 177 golfers to emerge victorious during this year’s Karen Country Club Nite.
Chege carded 42 points sinking a birdie on the par 5 hole 2.
He carded 21 points in the first nine same as Rhoda Mwebesa, Muturi Muthoni, Caro White and Van Luijk Christa who posted similar results on the first nine.
Peter Munyiri carded 42 points to be crowned the runner-up, while Rose Mary Mkok emerged third.
However, Mkok carded 41 points to be crowned the women’s winner ahead of Caro White and Sarah Otolo.
Martin Kiambi was crowned the guest winner after carding 30 points.
Attention now turns to the 2019 KCB Road to the Masters with the first leg slated to take place during the weekend of of February 23m 2019 at the Sigona Golf Club.
The 2018 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship second runner-up, Edwin Mudanyi of Vet Lab, will lead five local elite amateur golfers at the 2019 Kenya Open Golf Championship.
The annual event will tee off on March 14-17 at the Karen Country Golf Club with a total of 1.1 million euros prizes up for grabs.
Other local amateurs include Mudanyi’s club-mate Mike Kisia (handicap 1) who is placed fourth at the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship rankings; Railways Golf Club’s Samuel Njoroge (handicap+2), who is also the 2018 Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Champion; Nyali Golf and Country Club’s Daniel Nduva (handicap +2), who is also the 2018 Kenya Amateur Match Play Champion, and Dubai-based junior golfer, Bradley Mogire (handicap +2), who was handed the Kenya Golf Union wild card.
The five, who were confirmed by the Kenya Golf Union, earned their places in the prestigious golf championship that has since been elevated to a European tour status after hard work throughout the year.
The Junior Golf Foundation nominee will be announced by end of the month to complete the list of six amateur players who will feature at this year’s Kenya Open.
Kenya Open Golf Limited (KOGL) remains upbeat that more players will be entered into the competition at the conclusion of the ongoing Safari Tour Golf Series.
“I congratulate the Kenya Golf Union for its continued work in enhancing the growth and development of golf in Kenya,” said KOGL chairman Peter Kanyago.
“I hope we will have more Kenyans making the cut this year and challenging for the top prize.”
