Bayern overpowers Bremen to extend lead in Bundesliga

The Bavarians assumed control from the starting whistle but couldn’t do any damage to Werder’s well-positioned defense in the opening stages.

Bayern had to wait until the 20th minute before Benjamin Pavard’s header forced Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka into action while Kingsley Coman pulled wide from a promising position four minutes later.

Bremen sparked to life and came close moments later as Bayern custodian Yann Sommer defused Leonardo Bittencourts’ dangerous attempt before Christian Gross couldn’t finish off his solo run in the 35th minute.

The German record champions took the upper hand again after the restart, but Gnabry and Sadio Mane lacked accuracy in front of the goal.

Thomas Tuchel’s boys eventually broke the deadlock at the hour mark when Jamal Musiala’s cutback pass found Gnabry, who tapped home the opener from very close range.

Bayern gained momentum and made it two ten minutes later after Noussair Mazraoui’s perfectly timed through ball allowed Sane to beat Pavlenka with a well-placed curl into the bottom left corner.

Bremen’s resistance still wasn’t broken as the Green Whites halved the deficit out of the blue in the 86th minute when joker Niklas Schmidt unleashed a hammer from 18 meters to stun Sommer into the top right corner.

The hosts pressed frenetically but Bayern’s defense stood firm to secure vital points in the title hunt.

“I am very happy with the result and satisfied about how we played. We were missing a bit of momentum and lacked in accuracy in the final third. In the end, we had to fight because we had to swallow a stunning goal. It is a deserved but narrow victory,” said Bayern coach Tuchel.
