Mohamed Salah says he is “not asking for crazy stuff” in contract talks, as he reiterated that it is up to Liverpool to decide his future.
Mohamed Salah $15.96 is hopeful that a deal can be done with Liverpool to extend his contract beyond the 2023 expiration on his current contract. He has stated very publicly that he wants to stay at Anfield but as of yet, both parties have failed to come to an agreement.
Salah is currently representing Egypt at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon where he is hoping he can deliver a record 8th title to ‘The Pharaohs’. His beloved country is the record titleholder with seven, and they won an unprecedented three in a row between 2006 and 2010 but they have failed to regain the title since. Their best effort was a final appearance in 2017 where they were runners-up to this year’s hosts Cameroon.
Former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz enters his first major tournament as head coach of Egypt. He will be heavily reliant on Salah and hoping his star man can replicate his Premier League form in Cameroon.
This seasons Premier League’s top scorer spoke to GQ about his Liverpool contract:
“I want to stay, but it’s not in my hands. It’s in their hands,”
“They know what I want. I’m not asking for crazy stuff.”
“The thing is, when you ask for something, and they show you they can give you something [they should] because they appreciate what you did for the club.”
“I’ve been here for my fifth year now. I know the club very well. I love the fans. The fans love me. But with the administration, they have [been] told the situation. It’s in their hands.”
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp spoke very positively last month to Skysports about the ongoing contract negotiations with Salah’s representatives:
“We are having really good conversations.”
Klopp is facing a massive rebuilding job within the next five years as his current crop of superstars is heading into their thirties. Roberto Firmino $2.00 is now 30 years of age, Sadio Mane $6.99 is 29, Mo Salah $15.96 is 29, Jordan Henderson $5.41 is 31, Thiago Alcantara $7.35 is 30, Virgil van Dijk $20.93 is 30, and Fabinho $6.57 is 28.
But Liverpool fans will still have another 2-3 seasons of these players in their primes. Salah was the top earner at Liverpool until Van Dijk signed his new contract extension. Now the figures being talked about around a new deal are in the region of £300,000 a week.
Nobody could begrudge Salah if he was to request such a weekly wage. He is currently the best footballer in the world. He has helped guide Liverpool to the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League crown. The Egyptian was influential in their run to another Champions League final and in the side that accumulated the highest points total ever by a team to finish second in the Premier League.
In terms of money generated for the club, it is hard to imagine the kind of numbers Mo Salah has brought into Anfield. The on-field success, the partnership, and sponsorship deals as a direct result of Mo Salah’s performances. How many people show up just to see Salah? How many people buy the Salah shirt from the club shop? He is a cash-cow for Liverpool FC.
This season alone Salah has 23 goals and 9 assists in just 26 games across the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. In his Liverpool career, he has played 229 games, in which he has scored 148 goals, and provided 56 assists.
Mo Salah is a so-called ‘Big Game Player’.
Record versus the Premier League’s top 5:
- Chelsea 17 games 7 goals
- Tottenham 15 games 8 goals
- Man City 13 games 7 goals
- Arsenal 12 games 8 goals
- Man Utd 9 games 7 goals
It is vitally important that Liverpool secure the services of Mo Salah beyond 2023.
