Tusker FC opened a four point gap on top of the BetKing Premier League (FKF-PL) after defeating Wazito FC by a solitary goal on Friday.
A win was vital for either side to ensure they make the top spot on the table their own.
Wazito, who have been on a good run under head coach Francis Kimanzi, started the better side and almost got their goal in the 13th minute when Fidel Origa got past his marker before forcing the Brewer’s keeper to make a save.
Kevin Kimani had a better chance to open the scoring in the 22nd minute. His team won a free-kick in a good area, but uncharacteristically, he failed to hit the target, skying his ball.
Ten minutes later, the 11-time champions had a massive chance to get their goal. They won a free-kick in a good area and it was brilliantly taken by Hashim Sempala. However, Levis Opiyo had to be alert to send the ball out for a corner.
The hosts came back stronger after the pause as they made their intentions of getting a goal clear.
In the 52nd minute, Henry Meja had a good chance to score when he capitalized on defensive lapses to get into the danger zone. However, he narrowly missed the target.
Eight minutes later, the forward once again controlled the ball expertly in a good area but he was denied by the cross bar.
It seemed the match would end 0-0, but Jackson Macharia had other ideas. He chased a long ball, controlled it well, rounded the keeper before finding the back of the net to hand his team a crucial win.
Tusker are now top of the table with 26 points while Wazito are third with six less.
