Europe top clubs in the market for quality defender have been handed transfer boost after it emerged that Raphael Varane is considering his Real Madrid future.

However the clubs keen on the French international would have to break the bank to acquire his services.

The likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are reported to be eyeing the 25-year-old.

After Liverpool paid 90 million euros for Virgil Van Dijk, quality defenders come at a high cost in today’s market.

With Varane’s ability and all the success he has enjoyed over the years, he is certain to either match or break the transfer record for a defender.

Varane is reportedly open to a move away from the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid would hold out for maximum profit for a player who has won four Champions Leagues, a World Cup and plenty more at just 25 years of age.

Los Blancos recently announced the 50 million capture of Militao from FC Porto, who has only just moved to Europe from Brazil but is not even in the top five most expensive defenders in the world.

Aymeric Laporte is the second priciest defender after Van Dijk at 70 million following his move from Athletic Club to Manchester City.

The English club was also involved in the third, fourth and fifth most expensive defensive transfers with the signings of Benjamin Mendy from Monaco (58 million), Kyle Walker from Tottenham (56 million) and John Stones from Everton (55.6 million).

However, despite the big money thrown around on defenders these days, it is unlikely that Madrid would sell Varane given his undeniable quality and importance to the team.

Zinedine Zidane played a key part in bringing him to the club from Lens and a defender of that pedigree is hard to find, at any price.
