Neymar has been charged for his foul-mouthed reaction towards officials in the wake of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League defeat to Manchester United.
The Brazillian was injured for the second leg of the last-16 clash, but watched from the touchline as Marcus Rashford scored a VAR penalty in added time to seal a 3-1 win that sent United through on away goals.
Neymar reacted furiously to the VAR handball decision that ultimately handed United victory and dumped PSG out, berating match officials in the tunnel and launching an expletive-ridden tirade towards them on his Instagram account.
UEFA have announced Neymar has been charged, with a fine and a possible ban on the cards for the world’s most expensive player.
“Charges against Paris St Germain: Player Neymar Junior – Insulting / molesting acts against match official (statements made by the player following the above-mentioned match) – Art. 15 (1) (d) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations,” said UEFA statement.
After PSG’s defeat, Neymar took to social media to vent his anger and said: “This is a disgrace, they put four people who know nothing about football in charge of looking at the replay for VAR.
“It’s just not possible!!! How is a guy going to hold his hand behind his back. Go f*** yourselves.”
The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, but a date for the hearing has yet to be confirmed.
The outburst, however, could come back to bite the Brazilian – as he has seemingly broken UEFA rules.
Article 11 of the UEFA Disciplinary Code suggests action may be taken if a player’s “conduct is insulting or otherwise violates the basic rules of decent conduct”.
UEFA could potentially impose a ban of one to three games, as established in section ‘B’ and ‘D’ of article 15 of the same Disciplinary Code.
